Two Leading Health Organizations Announce Recruiting Service to Support Public Health Workforce Needs

May 19, 2021

ARLINGTON, VA—Today, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) announced the launch of a new program for rapid, on-demand recruiting for governmental public health agencies looking to staff public health and healthcare professional positions. The program, StaffUP, will support public health agency efforts to efficiently access a workforce for both long-term recruiting functions and short-term or contract-based program staffing.

To do this, ASTHO teamed up with Wanderly, a healthcare staffing industry leader, to develop a school and community deployment program and public health agencies program. Job seekers can use the technology to customize application and onboarding processes, refer candidates to an external job site, automatically generate custom job postings, and other preferences, as needed.

“The COVID-19 pandemic taught us as a country the value of a well-staffed, robust public health workforce. As health agencies enter recovery mode, ASTHO felt it was vital to help both agencies and prospective employees find both long-term positions and short-term or contract-based roles,” says Michael Fraser, ASTHO’s CEO. “I’m thrilled that ASTHO can offer this service to the public health workforce.”

Wanderly helped 12 jurisdictions source “disability and preparedness specialists” as part of a CDC-funded cooperative agreement to build state and territory capacity and is the employer of record for these public health professionals who are supporting state and territory efforts as part of the program team. StaffUP can be used for a variety of clinical and administrative specialties, including community health workers and medical assistants, nurses, physicians, project managers, grants administrators, informatics specialists, and many others.

“As a leader in public health, teaming up with ASTHO only made sense as health agencies continue to staff up. It is my hope that our partnership will help both health professionals and health employers find the perfect fit in this pandemic recovery period and beyond,” says Robert Longyear, Wanderly’s vice-president of digital health and innovation.
