What Is Long COVID?

Long COVID is defined as a chronic condition that occurs after SARS-CoV-2 infection and lasts for at least three months. It includes a wide range of symptoms or conditions that may improve, worsen, or be ongoing.

Long COVID Programs Across Jurisdictions

Federal funding from NIH’s RECOVER Initiative and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Long COVID grants, combined with state resources and additional grant programs, has helped establish Long COVID programs nationwide. These efforts, driven by targeted funding, have enhanced care and support for impacted individuals and communities.

Colorado

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) is tackling the impacts of Long COVID with initiatives to enhance care, raise awareness, and support affected communities. CDPHE created the Colorado Long COVID Community of Practice to foster collaboration, share insights, guide care strategies, and boost public awareness through online platforms.

Minnesota

Minnesota’s Department of Health (MDH) leads a statewide Long COVID program focused on research, care, and community support. The state provides specialized outreach through partnerships with the Mayo Clinic, Essentia Health, and local groups. MDH also established a Long COVID Guiding Council to ensure equitable community access.

New York City

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has prioritized raising awareness and engaging communities about Long COVID. Activities include multilingual training for community and faith-based organizations and a three-part campaign that shares personal stories from those living with Long COVID.
