ASTHO Assistance for Jurisdictions Impacted by Hurricanes Ian and Fiona

Hurricanes pose serious health and safety threats to communities caught in their path, both in the immediate aftermath of the storm and in the weeks and months afterwards. In 2022, Hurricanes Ian and Fiona caused dozens of deaths and billions of dollars in damage. In 2023 and 2024, CDC awarded ASTHO funding four jurisdictions in building capacity to recover from the environmental health impacts of Hurricanes Ian and Fiona. The focus of these efforts centered on enhancing workforce capacity, training, technical assistance, and supply procurement. Additionally, ASTHO launched a Hurricane Response and Recovery Community of Practice in the summer of 2024 to bring together the four jurisdictions to share challenges, best practices, and practical advice to further build their hurricane preparedness and response capacity, with a focus on environmental health preparedness.
These efforts demonstrate successful models that can be reused and refined to continue building capacity to prepare for, respond to, and recover from the environmental health impacts of hurricanes. Learn more about how ASTHO and CDC supported these four jurisdictions in the full report.
