AI in Public Health

ASTHO is at the forefront of helping state and territorial health agencies navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) in public health, a core workstream under the Public Health Infrastructure Grant. Our AI work spans two core areas:

  • Proactively building the field, developing resources, frameworks, and pilot initiatives that translate emerging AI capabilities into practical public health applications. Backed by decades of convening authority and deep relationships across U.S. jurisdictions, we facilitate peer learning forums and communities of practice where health officials can share insights, surface challenges, and build capacity together.
  • Reactive technical advising tailored to the specific needs of individual agencies. When a state or territory encounters an AI challenge — whether in governance, procurement, implementation, or evaluation — ASTHO brings subject matter expertise and cross-jurisdictional perspective to help find solutions that work in real-world public health contexts.

Together, these two workstreams position ASTHO as both a thought leader and a trusted partner for AI adoption across the public health enterprise. Learn more about AI in public health and ASTHO’s work to support it in the resources that follow.
