Standard 3.1

Provide health education and health promotion policies, programs, processes, and interventions to support prevention and wellness.

Health promotion involves a wide range of social and environmental changes that allow and encourage the population to be healthy. Health promotion policies, programs, processes, and interventions are the mainstay of public health improvement efforts. Health promotion can involve health education, communication, working with the media and other stakeholders, social marketing, health equity, behavior change, environmental changes, community mobilization, community development, and policy changes.

Health education is an important component of encouraging the adoption of healthy behaviors. Health education provides the information needed to improve and protect their health. Health education involves futhering knowledge about the health issue and the target population and sharing that information in a manner and format that can be used effectively by the population.
