ASTHOConnect: Addressing Older Adult Falls: State Examples, Medical Costs, and Opioid Misuse

Join ASTHO for a webinar on older adult falls. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Injury Prevention and Control team and the University of Vermont Medical Center’s Trauma Services team will share their successes, challenges, and lessons learned from ASTHO’s Older Adult Falls Prevention Learning Collaborative. Those presentations will be followed by a panel discussion with Brenda Iliff, Executive Director of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation in Florida who will highlight their work on older adults’ opioid misuse and address associated falls risks; and Dr. Gwen Bergen, Behavioral Scientist in the Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention at CDC who will discuss the medical costs of older adult falls, and highlight “The Medical Costs of Fatal and Nonfatal Falls among Older Adults”, a CDC publication.

Objectives:

  • Share Vermont and Massachusetts’s successes, challenges, and lessons learned in the Older Adult Falls Prevention Learning Collaborative
  • Discuss older adult falls’ intersection with opioids misuse
  • Discuss medical costs of fatal and nonfatal falls among older adults
