Minimizing preventable disease and injury
About
ASTHO's Prevention Program works toward eliminating behaviorally-based disease and injury. The work done in the program's focal areas are central to ASTHO's stance on U.S. health reform.
Chronic Disease
ASTHO assists our members to develop policies that integrate and promote chronic disease prevention in the areas of cancer, heart disease and stroke, and work to address the underlying risk factors of tobacco use, physical activity, and nutrition.
HIV Education Project
ASTHO is working with CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to explore issues related to how public health departments and departments of education collaborate to provide HIV prevention education to adolescents and other adult prevention and health promotion issues. ASTHO conducted a focus group of its members, the state and territorial health officials to understand the opportunities, challenges and successes the state health departments have encountered in working with the education departments on HIV/AIDS education. Preventing HIV in adolescents requires sound school health programming, reliable survey data (YRBS), and collaboration between state education and public health agencies. A report on the results of the focus group is available here
