About
The State Environmental Health Directors (SEHD), are organized as an informal peer group within ASTHO and receives staff support and connectivity with state and territorial health officials. The SEHD seeks to enhance relationships and communication among states and partners and provide a forum for discussion of key issues and the sharing of best practices.

2009 Workgroups and Members
The SEHD group currently has three main and two ad-hoc workgroups for the year addressing their main priorities: Safe Water, Indoor Environments/Healthy Housing, and Workforce Development as the main workgroups, and Toxicology and Health Impact Assessments as the ad-hoc workgroups.

Annual Meetings
Fall 2009 State Environmental Health Directors Meeting
Fourth Annual Meeting, October 28-29, 2009 - Atlanta, GA. The following priorities were addressed at the meeting: Safe Water, Workforce Development, and Indoor Environments. There was also a session on Children's Environmental Health, the National Conversation of Chemical Exposures, the National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network, and the continuing investigations on imported Chinese drywall. The meeting also featured a partner's panel with speakers from NIEHS, APHA, and NCSL.
2009 State Environmental Health Directors Meeting
Third Annual Meeting, March 23-25, 2009 – Denver, CO. The following priorities were addressed at the meeting: Safe Water, Workforce Development, Health Impact Assessments, and Indoor Environments/Healthy Housing. There was also a session on the National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network, the budget crisis, and a partner’s panel containing speakers from NIEHS, EPA, NEHA, NCSL, and APHA to discuss their environmental health initiatives.
Safe Water (pdf)
This session provided the SEHD members with the opportunity to give feedback on several important water issues. The discussion ranged from pharmaceuticals/personal care products in drinking water to water recreation to water security. The SEHD members agreed to continue to support the efforts of the Safe Water work group, chaired by Gregg Grunenfelder (SEHD-WA).
Health Impact Assessments (pdf)
The Health Impact Assessments (HIA) session focused on the use of this tool to promote health concerns in adopting policies, projects, or programs. HIAs attempt to gauge the impact of a particular program on the health of a given population. Topics covered in this particular session include: 1. A brief background on the HIAs, 2. How to determine when to do an HIA, 3. HIA process models and 4. How can we build HIA capacity at the state level?
Indoor Environments/Healthy Housing (pdf)
The Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) session focussed on the scarcity of tools for measuring indoor environmental quality and in the enforcement of healthy housing regulations. Dr. Clifford Mitchell (SEHD- MD) chaired this session.
