Last week, an expert ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids: The Current State of Evidence and Recommendations for Research, a report that details nearly 100 conclusions related to the health effects of cannabis and cannabinoid use and outlines four recommendations. The report recommends that researchers develop a comprehensive evidence base on the short- and long-term health effects of cannabis use, and calls on state and local health departments and public health organizations to fund and support public health surveillance improvements to ensure data is available for research. ASTHO’s state legislative tracking efforts have already identified several bills addressing cannabis research, including proposals in Virginia (HJ 578), Arizona (HB 2313), Utah (HB 130), and Oregon (HB 2197).
