ASTHO President Ed Ehlinger Leads Congressional Briefing on Health Equity

On Jun. 14, ASTHO President and Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Health Ed Ehlinger headlined and moderated the Congressional briefing, "Advancing Health Equity and Optimal Health for All." The briefing highlighted ASTHO's 2016 President's Challenge, which aims to empower state and territorial health agencies to promote optimal health for all by taking up at least one critical component of the Triple Aim of Health Equity: 1) expanding our understanding of what creates health; 2) implementing a Health in All Policies approach with health equity as the goal; and 3) strengthening the capacity of communities to create their own healthy future. U.S. Senator Al Franken (D-MN) sponsored the event and provided opening remarks. The U.S. House bipartisan Congressional Public Health Caucus cosponsored the briefing. Other presenters included Leandris Liburd, director of the CDC Office of Minority Health and Health Equity; Swannie Jett, president of NACCHO and health officer at the Florida Department of Health in Seminole County; Nancy Rockett Eldridge, executive director of the National Center for Healthy Housing; Doran Schrantz, executive director of ISAIAH; and Soma Stout, executive lead of the 100 Million Healthier Lives initiative at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
