State Health Officials Meet with Congress and Administration Officials During ASTHO Hill Day Activities

On Mar. 10, state health officials from around the country visited nearly 60 congressional offices during ASTHO's 2016 Hill Day. During the meetings, health officials educated their federal delegations about issues critical to state public health, including state activities related to preparedness, the Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant, opioid abuse, and the Zika virus response. On March 9, ASTHO's board of directors and policy committee chairs discussed issues important to public health with Obama administration officials. Participants included:

  • John Auerbach, associate director for policy and acting director of CDC's Office for State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support.
  •  Robert Califf, FDA commissioner.
  • Kana Enomoto, acting SAMHSA administrator.
  • Richard Frank, HHS assistant secretary for planning and evaluation.
  • Nicole Lurie, HHS assistant secretary for preparedness and response.
  • Jim Macrae, acting HRSA administrator.
  • Victor Mendez, U.S. Department of Transportation deputy secretary.
  • Vivek Murthy, United States surgeon general.
  •  Tom Novotny, HHS deputy assistant secretary for health.
