Standards & Interoperability

ASTHO is a member of several health IT Standards Development Organizations (SDO) and works collaboratively on the Standards & Interoperability (S&I) Framework’s Public Health Tiger Team. ASTHO is committed to increasing the perspective and needs of state public health in standards development.

Public Health Community Platform
ASTHO is leading a CDC funded community project called the Public Health Community Platform (PHCP): a resource to increase jurisdictional efficiencies by leveraging shared infrastructure, data, and services to fundamentally change our public health workflows and foster innovative solutions to public health problems. The PHCP is currently working to advance electronic case notification of reportable conditions by providing the infrastructure and necessary components for a nation-wide solution for public health and clinical providers. Additionally, the PHCP is working to identify and develop additional use cases and pilots for immunizations, analysis and visualization of public health data, and additional use cases that could be efficiently deployed in a shared environment.

Standards Development Organizations
ASTHO works with some of the leading health IT related Standards Development Organizations (SDO) such as Health Level 7 (HL7), Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE), and others to ensure that state public health needs are represented. HIT standards allow for data to be extracted, transported, and integrated into systems increasing the potential for interoperable systems.
