Pandemic Influenza

About Pandemic Influenza

An influenza pandemic occurs when a novel influenza virus causes a worldwide outbreak of disease with a very high attack rate. This work includes the development of the At-Risk Population Planning Guidance, public engagements on vaccine prioritization and the social distancing law project.

State Funding

State Funding for Pandemic Influenza

ASTHO supported a FY09 appropriation of $350 million to fund state and territorial pandemic influenza preparedness activities. This amount is consistent with funds provided through the first federal emergency supplemental appropriation in FY06 and is necessary to sustain and enhance state and territorial pandemic preparedness efforts.

At-Risk Populations Project

Some individuals are at increased risk of suffering severe consequences during an influenza pandemic and may need special assistance to maintain basic medical care, as well as access to food and shelter. This project developed guidance for state, territorial, tribal and local health departments on planning for at-risk populations and pandemic influenza.
