Branding Public Health

Branding Public Health

ASTHO’s Branding Public Health Initiative is guided by the goal of delivering a message to the public that result in a better understanding of the role, activities, and value of state public health. ASTHO has created voluntary branding materials which include print and radio script templates. These resources are designed to be customized by each state health agency as appropriate. The branding tools may assist agencies by:

  • Improving public health visibility.
  • Strengthening public health workforce recruitment efforts.
  • Improving policymaker understanding of public health.

The development of these templates and scripts was supported by grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Guidelines for Use

Before using these templates, please review the branding guidelines below:

ASTHO Guidelines for Using Marketing Tools (pdf)

Print Ads

To help state health agencies create print ads, ASTHO is providing templates (link above, see pp. 2-7, 11, 12) that agencies can duplicate and feature in public health marketing campaigns. The templates highlight possible marketing concepts for states and the corresponding Getty image numbers.

You are welcome to use your own images; however agency staff will have to contact Getty Images to purchase the images used in the templates and to receive licensed usage of the copyrighted photos included in the materials.

To purchase images, states will need to complete the following steps:

  • Determine how the print ad will be used (i.e., web, print, billboard, combination); the length of time the images will be available (i.e., months, a year, indefinitely); and, the number of items that need to be printed.
  • Register on the website and contact Getty Images via phone at 800-IMAGERY (462-4379) or via the website.
  • Determine the image numbers (displayed below every image listing) that will be used.
  • Negotiate price with Getty Images and receive a quote.

Once Getty Images has given agency staff the high resolution assets and a license, states can work with their internal communications department to create ad materials.

To select alternate images, agency staff will need to go to the Getty Images website to retrieve the image numbers. Three of the images in the branding template slide show (cereal, crawling baby, and couple) were composited, meaning multiple images/visual elements from separate sources were combined into a single image. A communications professional will need to assist with the compositing process for those concept templates.

Radio Ads

The radio ads (links above) are provided as another marketing tool for agencies.

Version 1 was developed by Black Design and ASTHO membership and is included in the Branding Templates PDF.

Version 2 consists of alternate edits to the original scripts, provided by ASTHO Communications staff.
