Health Improvement Intern

Location: Arlington, VA

Department: Health Improvement and Chronic Disease Prevention

Reports to: Director, Chronic Disease and Prevention; Health Improvement; Injury and Behavioral Health

List of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Completes assigned tasks under supervision of Health Improvement and Chronic Disease Prevention staff on injury prevention, behavioral health, chronic disease, and health improvement projects.
  • Conducts literature reviews and prepares fact sheets, issue briefs, and other written materials on health promotion and disease prevention topics related to injury prevention, behavioral health, chronic disease, and health improvement. 
  • Collects, analyzes, and disseminates information through the web site, bi-weekly newsletter, e-mail, and other ASTHO communications channels.
  • Drafts and edits newsletter items or other routine writing products.
  • Handles administrative tasks such as meeting planning, setting up conference calls, and committee/workgroup mailings.
  • Provides support for the health improvement team learning community projects.
  • Takes notes during meetings and summarizes information for staff. 
  • Attends appropriate health improvement related meetings and participates in relevant local in-person meetings, webinars, and conference calls.
  • Functions effectively in a team environment. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree, MPH or related degree candidate preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Experience: Demonstrable experience in state or local public health; experience/interest in injury prevention, behavioral health, chronic disease prevention, health improvement, and other related public health issues; or current enrollment in a master's program in public health or related field.
  • Skills: Strong written and oral communications skills, ability to work independently and follow directions, and ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner. Experience with MS Office applications and webinar platforms.
