I challenge state health leaders to study the data and consider adopting at least one policy strategy this year that could lessen the burden of preventable injury and death.  – Dr. Paul Halverson, ASTHO President    LEARN MORE

Dangerous intersection indeed: A journalist reporting on unsafe traffic patterns almost becomes part of the story when two cars make his point for him.
December's Focus Area: Motor Vehicle Safety
Beating Back the Deadly Toll of Motor Vehicle Injuries

Proven interventions

  • Child safety seats
  • Crash cushions
  • Energy absorbing steering columns
  • Government purchase of air bags
  • Graduated drivers licenses
  • Guardrails
  • Helmet laws
  • Minimum legal drinking age laws
  • Penalties for drunk driving
  • Random breath testing
  • Roundabouts
  • Seat belt use
  • Third brake light
  • Unleaded gasoline

Motor vehicle-related incidents are the leading cause of death for people ages 1 to 34, and send nearly 5 million injured to the emergency room.

But we as public health advocates, armed with proven, evidence-based policies, have the power to stem the tide of preventable injury. Instead of relying on sometimes inconsistent enforcement of traffic laws, we can draw on effective public policies like the ones detailed here, empowering us all to make a difference.

CDC, ASTHO Partnering on Teen Driver Interventions
How many lives could be saved if all graduated drivers license policies were strengthened to the most restrictive level or, if we eliminated alcohol-impaired driving by young drivers? ASTHO and the CDC/NCIPC are working to quantify data like these to promote the positive impact of evidence-based interventions for teen drivers.
"We are extremely pleased that ASTHO's presidential challenge for the upcoming year is to reduce preventable injuries and death," said Amy Harris, Acting Deputy Director of CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. "We are excited to be partnering with ASTHO on this important initiative to help Americans live to their full potential."
ASTHO Applauds CA, NY Officials on Tough New Measures
The efforts of public health officials were key to new interventions against drunk driving in two states. California has enacted a pilot program requiring the use of ignition interlock devices for DUI offenders, and New York is poised to follow.
ASTHO applauds the following California and New York officials for their hard work in support of these measures:
  • Barbara Alberson, Chief, State and Local Injury Control, California Department of Health Services
  • Dr. Richard F. Daines, New York State Health Official; Member, ASTHO Board of Directors
  • Susan Hardman, Director, Bureau of Injury Prevention, New York State Department of Health; Member, ASTHO Prevention Committee; Chair, STIPDA Policy Committee
  • Dr. Mark Horton, California State Health Official; Member, ASTHO Board of Directors; Chair, ASTHO Access Committee
